A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"Speaking with locals and living in a country is the best way to learn about the real lives of citizens, not just the stories in the mainstream media. I will be more critical of what I read as a result of this experience. I also feel even more grateful for my education, and I feel a stronger responsibility to assist others who do not have resources or access to opportunities in their communities."

Maria Skouras (New York University) volunteered in 2011 as a Peace Fellow for eHomemakers in Malaysia.

Campaign

The women of Bosfam have never accepted the role of victims. Ever since the Srebrenica massacre, they have sought to rebuild their lives - mostly around weaving.

Their objectives reflect some of the challenges set out above. As mothers and wives, they need to identify and bury missing relatives, and after 15 years 3,150 massacre victims have yet to be identified. They need to earn an income. Finally, some of them want to return to their homes in Srebrenica itself. Meanwhile, for comfort, they turn to each other and the solace of weaving at Bosfam’s large house in Tuzla. As a group, they are determined that the massacre will never be forgotten, and that those who carried out the killing are brought to justice.

Aiding Justice: The Srebrenica Memorial quilt was shown at the trial of
Radovan Karadzic in the Hague in October 2009, bringing Bosfam’s long campaign
for justice to a dramatic climax.
.
As the following pages will show, these goals have come together around weaving, and found expression in the memorial Quilt. The Quilt itself is also the culmination of eight years of cooperation between Bosfam and The Advocacy Project, in Bosnia and the United States. Each year has brought a new dimension to the campaign.
