Outreach
The Río Negro Memorial Quilt is used as an advocacy tool to promote recognition of the severe human rights abuses which occurred during the Guatemalan civil war. The quilt was launched in Albuquerque, New Mexico on December 10, 2008.
- Washington, DC (March 23, 2009) ADIVIMA Director Juan de Dios Garcia and Founder Carlos Chen gave a presentation entitled Seeking Justice for Mass Atrocities through the Inter-American System at The Moriah Fund.
- Arlington, VA (March 22, 2009) ADIVIMA and AP staff met with members of the Arlington Unitarian Universalist Church to discuss the ongoing reparations case in Guatemala and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights hearings which took place in Washington, DC on March 21, 2009. The church group recently visited Guatemala and was excited to re-connect with ADIVIMA representatives in the US.
- Arlington, VA (March 20, 2009) A delegation of ADIVIMA staff, including ADIVIMA founder Carlos Chen and Director Juan de Dios Garcia presented the Rio Negro Memorial Quilt to Guatemalan diaspora community members at the Buckingham Outreach Center.
- Washington, DC (January 23, 2009) The Association for the Integral Developent of the Victims of Violence in the Verapaces, Maya Achi (ADIVIMA) and The Advocacy Project presented a lecture entitled “Rebuilding after Genocide in Guatemala.” Heidi McKinnon, AP’s Peace Fellow who works with ADIVIMA in Rabinal, Guatemala, spoke at the Arca Foundation’s boardroom (1308 19th St. NW) from 10:00 – 11:30 AM.
- Washington, DC (January 22, 2009) The Georgetown Human Rights Forum, with the Institute for the Study of International Migration and The Advocacy Project presented a lecture entitled “Rebuilding after Genocide in Guatemala.” The event took place on Thursday, January 22 from 12:30 – 2:00 PM in the McGhee Library at Georgetown University. Heidi McKinnon, an Advocacy Project Peace Fellow who has been working with AP’s partner organization in Guatemala since June 2008 discussed her experiences and the ongoing reparations negotiations in Guatemala.
- Santa Fe, NM (December 12, 2008) AP Peace Fellow Heidi McKinnon gave a twenty minute radio interview for Santa Fe Public Radio on their popular Sante Fe Radio Café program. You can listen to the podcast here.
- Albuquerque, NM (December 10, 2008) AP Peace Fellow Heidi McKinnon presented a Human Rights Day lecture about her work with ADIVIMA to the UN Association of Albuquerque. The Río Negro Memorial Quilt was exhibited.
