A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"Speaking with locals and living in a country is the best way to learn about the real lives of citizens, not just the stories in the mainstream media. I will be more critical of what I read as a result of this experience. I also feel even more grateful for my education, and I feel a stronger responsibility to assist others who do not have resources or access to opportunities in their communities."

Maria Skouras (New York University) volunteered in 2011 as a Peace Fellow for eHomemakers in Malaysia.

Althea Middleton-Detzner and the Asociación para Politicas Públicas (IANSA)

Fletcher School for Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University

Althea Middleton-Detzner will be working this summer as an AP Fellow with the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA) and their local organization Asociación para Politicas Públicas in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Althea’s interest in international affairs, human rights, and activism stemmed originally from travels to Asia and Africa at a young age.  She received her B.A. in International Affairs and Development Studies in 2005 from the Elliott School of International Affairs at The George Washington University and will enroll this fall in the Fletcher School for Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.

During her undergraduate studies, Althea spent a semester studying International Development at Centro Internacional para el Medio Ambiente y Salud (CIMAS), based in Quito, Ecuador.  While living in Quito, Althea worked in the Resettlement Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), conducting and translating interviews with Colombian refugees fleeing persecution from armed groups within Colombia. The following year, she spent a semester at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa, studying gender, politics and history in Asia, Africa, and the Americas.  In Cape Town, she was a member of the UCT women's soccer team and had an opportunity to participate as an election observer for South Africa's 2004 presidential elections.

In 2005, Althea joined the staff at the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict (ICNC), most recently as their Director of Programs and Services. Since joining ICNC, Althea has focused on the Center’s programmatic, research, and educational initiatives, organized their annual Fletcher Summer Institute for the Advanced Study of Nonviolent Conflict, and led the publication of its Daily Digest of News Relating to Nonviolent Conflict.

While in Buenos Aires, Althea will utilize her knowledge and experience in nonviolent conflict to raise awareness and advocate for the prevention of gun violence in Argentina, Latin America, and worldwide.
