Salaam Wanita women cannot work outside their homes for many reasons. Some are single moms, some have chronic illnesses, and others have children with disabilities that require their full attention. Many have tried to work outside the home, but little education and no skills leaves them open to exploitation by factory work, while their family suffers due to lack of attention. Salaam Wanita was born in 2002 to help these women help themselves.
When you purchase a basket you will be supporting fair trade principles. Fair trade practices generally require that artists are paid 15 to 30 percent of the final selling price. Salaam Wanita goes beyond the minimum requirement and proudly pays the women an additional 40 to 50 percent of the final selling price. By avoiding expensive middlemen, we keep our prices affordable for our consumers while returning higher earnings to the weavers.

Purchase Baskets to Support Women in Malaysia
Salaam Wanita, a project of eHomemakers, was launched to help disadvantaged women lead more independent lives through technical skills training. One of Salaam Wanita’s projects teaches women to weave “eco-baskets,” which are made out of donated recycled magazines and newspapers and then sold. View a seven minute video that shows the weaving process and contains interviews with three weavers.
