A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"I look at myself as having the potential to be as strong and caring as the amazing women I met in Kenya."

Kate Cummings (Tufts University) volunteered in 2009 as a Peace Fellow for Vital Voices in Africa.

Building a Campaign

This service is offered to partners that launch a campaign for social change, and is the culmination of AP’s engagement with a partner.

One of the most successful campaigns that AP has supported involves the Travellers of Dale Farm, in Southeast England, who were ordered evicted from their land in 2005. The Travellers took their campaign to Downing Street, home of the Prime Minster (left), and to the English High Court.

1. Long-Term Peace Fellow

AP will recruit a long-term Peace Fellow to work for at least one year with all partners that develop a campaign, assuming that funding can be found.

2. Defining Campaign Goals

AP staff will help partners to identify clear and actionable goals for a two-year campaign, aimed at promoting social justice and producing social change.

3. Networking

Working from Washington and locally, AP staff will develop a database of contacts (media, government, universities, policy experts, NGOs etc) for the partner. These will be on the partner’s mailing list and receive the material produced by the campaign.

4. International Outreach

AP will organize a program of outreach on behalf of campaign partners, among high schools, universities, women’s groups and diaspora organizations in the US and Europe. AP will then use this network for visiting speakers, presentations, fundraising activities, pen pal projects, and lobbying – all aimed at providing support for the campaigns of partners. Peace Fellows will also contribute to these outreach activities on their return home.

5. Fundraising

AP generated over $1.9 million for partners between 2003 and December 2010, and makes a good faith effort to raise funds for campaigns. This will be done in three ways:

6. Monitoring and evaluation

AP will help partners to develop a detailed Monitoring and Evaluation plan for campaign partnerships, ensure that reports are produced on time, and if necessary contribute to monitoring.
