A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change.

We are currently recruiting graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"I look at myself as having the potential to be as strong and caring as the amazing women I met in Kenya."

Kate Cummings (Tufts University) volunteered in 2009 as a Peace Fellow for Vital Voices in Africa.

Disability Rights in Uganda

The rebellion by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in northern Uganda left a terrible legacy of poverty, mutilation, and sickness. Fourteen percent of the population may suffer from a disability - significantly higher than other parts of the country. Yet disability has been largely left out of reconstruction. In the villages, people with disabilities are often shunned and isolated.

They are now demanding change. The Gulu Disabled Persons Union (GDPU), a network of five advocacy groups, has launched a campaign to make public buildings and services accessible in Gulu and Amuru districts. In 2010, GDPU also plans to nominate its members for election to local parish development committees, where they can advocate for a village-based disability agenda.

These pages introduce some of the campaigners, set out the challenge, monitor progress, and provide resources.

Milestones: November 25, 2009: Responding to pressure from the campaign, the Gulu municipal and district councils vote to make schools, hospitals and health centers throughout Gulu accessible. Read more…
