A Voice For the Voiceless
The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

Courtney Chance and the Centre for Conflict Resolution (IANSA)
School of International Service at American University
Courtney Chance will be working in Uganda with The Centre for Conflict Resolution (CECORE) as a 2009 Peace Fellow. CECORE is a regional member organization of The International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA), an organization committed to halting the proliferation of small arms and light weapons around the globe. CECORE serves the tumultuous Great Lakes region of Africa, where a widespread supply of cheap firearms has fuelled and prolonged several of the world’s most violent conflicts. Through regional training and advocacy programs, CECORE ultimately seeks to empower individuals and communities to transform conflict and to establish a culture of peace and tolerance.
CECORE supports a number of peace-building initiatives including, but not limited to, training local populations in conflict prevention and resolution, hosting workshops and conferences that offer a forum for dialogue and reconciliation between parties in conflict, researching and disseminating information to the media and local constituencies, and planning peace-building events within the community. Courtney is honored to have the opportunity to represent The Advocacy Project and IANSA and to contribute to CECORE’s immensely valuable work. In conjunction with IANSA’s Women’s Network, she will be working on a campaign to raise awareness on violence against women, a problem that has reached epidemic proportions, especially in the Democratic Republic of the Congo which UN Undersecretary General John Holmes described as the world’s worst place in the world for women.
Courtney, a graduate student focusing on the intersection of human rights and conflict at American University’s School of International Affairs, has been working as an intern with The Advocacy Project since September 2008. During this time, she has facilitated communication between AP and a diverse array of grassroots human rights organizations based in countries across the globe. In recent months, Courtney has been preparing a report on innovations in the field of international volunteer service. She has also represented AP through her legislative advocacy work with the Building Bridges Coalition (BBC), an alliance of more than 180 organizations committed to increasing opportunities for international volunteerism. In March, the BBC Advocacy Group lobbied for and later celebrated the passage of the Kennedy Serve America Act, a bill which provides increased government support for both domestic and international volunteer programs.
