A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"Speaking with locals and living in a country is the best way to learn about the real lives of citizens, not just the stories in the mainstream media. I will be more critical of what I read as a result of this experience. I also feel even more grateful for my education, and I feel a stronger responsibility to assist others who do not have resources or access to opportunities in their communities."

Maria Skouras (New York University) volunteered in 2011 as a Peace Fellow for eHomemakers in Malaysia.

Current Projects

With the generous support of Germany’s IFA-ZIVIK Advocacy Project is building the capacity of SOS Femmes en Danger to continue their vital work in DRC.  AP works with SOS FED as a critical partner in the struggle against oppression by providing training, communication resources, mentorship, and international cooperation.

On the ground in Congo these efforts are maturing into sustainable and impactful programs for local women.

Rehabilitate rape survivors.
The first goal is to help victims of sexual violence emerge from isolation and trauma.

Reduce the vulnerability of survivors and other women in the communities.
The project will help women to cultivate crops, collect fuel, and draw water as a group, instead of going off alone into forests, where many attacks occur. They will also be encouraged to change their behavior to reduce risk.

Improve SOS FED’s capacity to serve the community.
In 2011, the group will receive training in leadership skills, trauma counseling, therapy, and information use/presentation.

Create and promote the Ahadi Quilt.
This art therapy and advocacy tool was hand-made by survivors to educate people outside DRC.  It comprises over 100 embroidered panels, some of which illustrate sexual violence.  Find out more...

Engage international partners to build support for the women on DRC.
Lobby key players in the UN who can build support for the strategy of reducing the vulnerability of women to rape.
