James Dasinger and the Dale Farm Housing Association
James is a graduate student in the Political Science department at California State University, Northridge. His main interest is in human rights policy and international relations. When he has finished his studies he hopes to eventually work for a major human rights or relief organization. His undergraduate work was in international studies (East Asia) at the University of South Alabama, in his home state of Alabama.
Before grad school James served for six years as a Chinese Linguist and Intelligence analyst for the US Air Force. He was decorated several times for his service and held a Top Secret/SCI security clearance throughout his career. He was honorably discharged from the military with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
On leaving the military he joined the Los Angeles chapter of Iraq Veterans Against the War and served as its Treasurer. Through IVAW he also benefited from formal media training and gained organizational experience. He considers the veterans he has worked with in IVAW to be some of the bravest and finest patriots he has ever known.
James is now privileged to be working with the Irish Travellers of Dale Farm under the auspices of the Dale Farm Housing Association. His own Irish background had lead to an interest in Irish politics.
Through his reading he discovered the Irish Travellers and the difficulties they faced as an ethnic minority within Ireland and the UK. He notes with some irony that many of the negative stereotypes with which Irish Travellers are painted in modern times, are the same stereotypes which faced the Irish immigrant population in America. He hopes to in some small way help the Irish Travellers on their road to gaining the kind of acceptance within the UK that people of Irish descent now enjoy within the US.
