A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"Speaking with locals and living in a country is the best way to learn about the real lives of citizens, not just the stories in the mainstream media. I will be more critical of what I read as a result of this experience. I also feel even more grateful for my education, and I feel a stronger responsibility to assist others who do not have resources or access to opportunities in their communities."

Maria Skouras (New York University) volunteered in 2011 as a Peace Fellow for eHomemakers in Malaysia.

Dara Lipton and Vital Voices – Kenya

Yale University

Dara Lipton will be a Peace Fellow for the Advocacy Project in conjunction with Vital Voices in Nairobi, Kenya over the summer of 2010.  She will be assisting the Kenyan Association of Women Business Owners (KAWBO) whose mission it is to empower female business owners in Kenya to grow and excel in their industry.  Dara will be conducting a baseline survey developed by Vital Voices of KAWBO participants, as well as producing success story profiles, networking with media outlets, developing a website and writing a weekly blog.

Dara is currently pursuing her MA in International Relations with a concentration in sustainable development in Africa at Yale University.  Prior to entering graduate school in 2009, Dara served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Uzbekistan and Suriname.  In Uzbekistan Dara assisted the staff at a community health clinic to improve health services and increase community awareness of preventable health problems through various outreach methods.  In Suriname she worked alongside a women’s group to develop and implement various projects centered on improved education, health and economic growth opportunities. In addition, she helped the women’s organization to strengthen their operations through improved relationships with local government and private stakeholders and increased access to sustainable funding sources.

Following her service Dara returned to Suriname as a Technical Trainer and was responsible for preparing Peace Corps Volunteers to be effective development workers, with a particular emphasis on the importance of considering issues of gender and sustainability in all of their projects.
