A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"I look at myself as having the potential to be as strong and caring as the amazing women I met in Kenya."

Kate Cummings (Tufts University) volunteered in 2009 as a Peace Fellow for Vital Voices in Africa.

Nicole Farkouh and the Collective Campaign for Peace

Nicole Farkouh is a fellow with AP’s partner organization, Collective Campaign for Peace (COCAP). She is excited to spend her summer in Nepal supporting the amazing work of COCAP and preparing to enter the second year of her Master of Public Policy degree at the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley.

Nicole is particularly interested in inter-cultural mediation and sees a need for increased communication and tolerance across various cultures domestically and throughout the world.

She is fascinated by alternative forms of conflict resolution – including mediation and group facilitation – and particularly how cultural perspectives can be brought into that process. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to spend time in Nepal, where this issue is so pressing.

Nicole graduated from Smith College with a BA in Cultural Anthropology and holds a Master of Education from the University of New Orleans. Her professional background is in the field of education where has worked as a teacher, administrator, and consultant, mainly with middle school students with special needs.

Additionally, she is a certified community mediator and has studied a complementary model of mediation based on Non-Violent Communication. She has studied abroad in India, lived and taught in Mexico, have traveled significantly – internationally and domestically.
