Farzin and the Association for the Defense of Azerbaijani Political Prisoners in Iran (ADAPP)
American University
Farzin will be working with the Association for the Defense of Azerbaijani Political Prisoners in Iran (ADAPP) for three months in the summer of 2009. He will be assisting Mrs. Fakhteh Zamani to raise awareness of the maltreatment of ethnic minorities by the Iranian government, particularly ethnic Azerbaijanis who are barred from linguistic and cultural expression. As a member of this ethnic group, the issue strikes close to home for Farzin. He is well versed in the subject matter and since he is a native Azerbaijani speaker, he is able to effectively communicate with ADAPP’s contacts.
In 2005, Farzin graduated with a B.A. in political science from McDaniel College with a concentration in international studies and a minor in cross-cultural studies. His undergraduate final paper focused on the nuclear issue in Iran. After a year, he continued his studies and completed a graduate degree in International Affairs from American University in December of 2008. His regional focus was the Middle East, particularly Iranian security. His final paper was entitled “The Rise of Iran: Implications on the Balance of Power in the Middle East.”
Throughout his undergraduate and graduate coursework, Farzin has held positions in research and analysis with professors at Johns Hopkins SAIS and Columbia University. As a research intern at the East-West Center, he researched for and helped edit a book on nuclear weapons security in Asia.
Farzin has had extensive travel experience throughout the region. He had spent the early years of his life in Iran and Turkey. During the summer of his graduate program, Farzin studied the political history of the Gulf States at the University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. Last summer, he was able to briefly visit Egypt.
