A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"Speaking with locals and living in a country is the best way to learn about the real lives of citizens, not just the stories in the mainstream media. I will be more critical of what I read as a result of this experience. I also feel even more grateful for my education, and I feel a stronger responsibility to assist others who do not have resources or access to opportunities in their communities."

Maria Skouras (New York University) volunteered in 2011 as a Peace Fellow for eHomemakers in Malaysia.

Fanny Grandchamp and Victimology Society of Serbia (IANSA)

Institute of Political Science of Grenoble

Fanny Grandchamp will be working with the Victimology Society of Serbia (VSS) in Belgrade this summer.  VSS is a member organization of the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA), a global network of women working to prevent gun violence in their communities at the national, regional, and international levels.  VSS works to protect victims of crime and human rights violations in Serbia.  Fanny will assist the organization in the launch of a campaign called Disarming Domestic Violence.  This campaign will seek to find effective solutions to the gun violence crisis by asking for women’s full involvement and through understanding the different ways in which women and men are affected by, and respond to guns.

Originally from Annecy in the French Alps, Fanny is currently pursuing a Masters degree in International Organizations at the Institute of Political Science of Grenoble.  She already holds a BA in Public Administration, also from Grenoble, with concentrations in national and international frameworks, politics, and Human Rights Law.  Fanny has studied abroad extensively, including a year in Truru, Canada prior to her undergraduate work and most recently a semester at the University of Exeter.

In addition to her studies, Fanny is currently a member of an association for asylum seekers which assists refugees with resettlement and other outreach and advocacy services.  She enjoys travelling and has spent significant time in developing countries. In 2006, Fanny spent a month in Senegal helping to build a school.  In 2007, she spent three months in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam as an intern in the social affairs department of the French Consulate.

Fanny is excited to go to the Serbia, as it will add a concrete dimension to the dissertation she wrote last year on Balkan judicial systems, among others.  She feels work with VSS will correspond well with issues she is particularly interested in like women and minorities in the region.  Fanny views the Fellowship as relevant experience and a springboard for the future career she hopes to pursue in human rights protection and post-conflict reconstruction.
