Send a Guatemalan Girl to School for a Year

In 1982, 177 indigenous women and children from Rio Negro, in central Guatemala, were slaughtered by paramilitaries after the community refused to relocate and make way for a large hydroelectric dam.

Amongst those who were killed were relatives of Brenda Perez, 13. While Brenda herself was born after the 1982 massacre, she still suffers from its aftermath. Many of the Rio Negro families are too poor to afford an education for their children. When they do, it is usually the boys who benefit. Many girls end up married or pregnant at the age of 13 or 14.

With only a sister to care for her, Brenda’s best chance for an education lies with the Association for the Integral Development of the Victims of Violence in the Verapaces, Maya Achi (ADIVIMA), a community group formed by Rio Negro survivors in the early 1990s, and partner of The Advocacy Project.

This year, ADIVIMA launched a scholarship program to help five young girls go to school, and so obtain good jobs. Brenda is one of the five selected. She likes mathematics and wants to be an accountant. She is determined to succeed, and committed to preserving the memory of her community.

The Advocacy Project has launched an appeal to support ADIVIMA’s scholarship program. $350 will keep a girl in school for a full year. It will pay for

Please give generously to our appeal and share this page with your friends. If you want to give in honor of a loved one, donate then download this document to personalize for your recipient. All funds raised will go to the young scholars.

Thank you!
