A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"Speaking with locals and living in a country is the best way to learn about the real lives of citizens, not just the stories in the mainstream media. I will be more critical of what I read as a result of this experience. I also feel even more grateful for my education, and I feel a stronger responsibility to assist others who do not have resources or access to opportunities in their communities."

Maria Skouras (New York University) volunteered in 2011 as a Peace Fellow for eHomemakers in Malaysia.

Tatsiana Hulko and the Women's Affairs Technical Committee (WATC)

Tatsiana Hulko is finishing her first year of a master's program in foreign service at Georgetown University with conflict management as her concentration.

In 2006 Tatsiana graduated from Minsk State Linguistic University in Belarus, her home country, with a bachelor's degree in translation and linguistics. Her fascination with the Arabic language and keen interest in the dynamics in the Middle East led her to pursue the certificate in Arab studies.

Tatsiana has been selected as an AP Peace Fellow and will be going this summer to Ramallah, the Palestinian Territories, to work with WATC on promoting women’s rights, community development and peace. Her previous experiences include working with the Belarusian youth magazine CD/Students’ Thought on promoting and strengthening civil society, as well as with a number of Belarusian charities that help children from the contaminated Chernobyl region.

Tatsiana is very excited about her summer in Palestine, which will be a fabulous opportunity for her to receive hands-on experience in the area that interests her most.
