A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"I look at myself as having the potential to be as strong and caring as the amazing women I met in Kenya."

Kate Cummings (Tufts University) volunteered in 2009 as a Peace Fellow for Vital Voices in Africa.

Resources

This page contains visual and other material, prepared by the JMC and AP, which are freely available for use. They begin with a photographic portrait of the Dalit by JMC reporters, taken after training from AP Peace Fellow Jes Therkelsen (2008). After leaving Nepal, Jes set up a new project, Clean Hands, which contains a photo library and a video on Dalit life. Readers can also find an archive of the JMC’s monthly 2008 e-bulletins on these pages. (These news bulletins were replaced by longer, thematic bulletins in 2009.) Finally, AP has compiled a large AP library of photos on Dalit issues.

"In the western world many picture Dalits as incredibly poor, helpless, and disenfranchised people. While there is some undeniable accuracy in this portrayal, it is incomplete. It is important to celebrate the heritage, culture, and accomplishments of the Nepali Dalit as they persist against all odds." — Ted Samuels, 2007 Peace Fellow
The Clean Hands Project was produced by 2008 Fellow Jes Therkelsen who trained Dalit Journalists in photography and videography to capture the story of the Dalit. Learn more about The Clean Hands Project.
In this brief interview produced by 2009 AP Peace Fellow Jessica Tirado, JMC president Rem Biswokarma talks about the organizations activities and goals, as well as what drew him personally to work on Dalit issues.
