A Voice For the Voiceless
The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

Johanna Paillet and Vital Voices of Cameroon
Monterey Institute of International Studies
This summer Johanna will serve as an AP fellow for Vital Voices in Cameroon advocating on behalf of women’s rights and working towards the empowerment of emerging women leaders.
Originally from Montpellier in the South of France, Johanna is pursuing her Master’s degree in International Policy Studies with a focus in International Development and Humanitarian Assistance at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. Prior to starting her Master’s degree, Johanna worked as a counselor for youths-at-risk in San Francisco. She also served as a rape counselor for Bay Area Women Against Rape (BAWAR), an Oakland-based non-governmental organization.
Following the completion of her Baccalauréat at the Lycée Français in San Francisco, Johanna attended the Academy of Art University where she specialized in documentary photography. Thereafter, she moved to Mexico to document the lives of the urban poor and to consolidate her Spanish language skills. Upon her return from Mexico, Johanna decided to pursue her undergraduate work at Mills College where she studied Anthropology and Political Science. During her time at Mills, Johanna had the opportunity to intern for the Alameda County Family Justice Center, an initiative of the Alameda District Attorney’s Office, where she investigated the effective delivery of services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Additionally, Johanna has been extensively involved with the National Model United Nations where she recently served as Director for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
As an aspiring development practitioner, Johanna believes that women should be placed at the center of the development agenda. She is looking forwards to applying the knowledge and functional skills she has acquired thus far and to learning a tremendous amount throughout her time as an AP fellow in Cameroon.
