A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"Speaking with locals and living in a country is the best way to learn about the real lives of citizens, not just the stories in the mainstream media. I will be more critical of what I read as a result of this experience. I also feel even more grateful for my education, and I feel a stronger responsibility to assist others who do not have resources or access to opportunities in their communities."

Maria Skouras (New York University) volunteered in 2011 as a Peace Fellow for eHomemakers in Malaysia.

The Love Blankets

AP's partner organization in Western Nepal, BASE (Backward Society Education), is helping former child laborers to make a series of Love Blankets to expose abusive labor practices against children in Nepal. Bonded labor is illegal, but is still practiced against children from the Tharu minority.  The first Love Blanket was made in 2010 under the supervision of two AP Peace Fellows - Adrienne Henck and Karie Cross – who worked with 183 children in 9 villages. In 2011, Peace Fellows Maelanny Purwaningrum (Oslo University) and Chantal Uwizera (American University) worked with children who had been rescued by BASE to produce three more Love Blankets. The blankets have been shown in Washington and are currently on exhibit in Norway. BASE and AP will use them in lobbying for a major program to eradicate child labor in Nepal.
