A Voice For the Voiceless
The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

"Speaking with locals and living in a country is the best way to learn about the real lives of citizens, not just the stories in the mainstream media. I will be more critical of what I read as a result of this experience. I also feel even more grateful for my education, and I feel a stronger responsibility to assist others who do not have resources or access to opportunities in their communities."
Maria Skouras (New York University) volunteered in 2011 as a Peace Fellow for eHomemakers in Malaysia.

The Maasai Girls ...
The Maasai Girls Quilt
 |
This quilt was made in 2011 by students at the Kakenya Center for Excellence, the first primary boarding school for girls in the Transmara district of Kenya. The school, founded by Dr. Kakenya Ntaiya, aims to end harmful cultural practices, such as female genital cutting and early force marriage, and to transform the lives of young Maasai girls through learning, self-knowledge, and access to opportunity. At the same time, it encourages girls to connect with non-destructive Maasai cultural traditions, such as story-telling and beading. The quilting project provided a creative outlet for the girls as they beaded scenes about their dreams for the future. The project was done in partnership with the Rehema Widows Group to portray a contrast between the historical oppression of women and the opportunities that come with education.
