A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"Speaking with locals and living in a country is the best way to learn about the real lives of citizens, not just the stories in the mainstream media. I will be more critical of what I read as a result of this experience. I also feel even more grateful for my education, and I feel a stronger responsibility to assist others who do not have resources or access to opportunities in their communities."

Maria Skouras (New York University) volunteered in 2011 as a Peace Fellow for eHomemakers in Malaysia.

Maelanny Purwaningrum and Backward Society Education

Maelanny  grew up in suburban area of Jakarta, Indonesia. She finished her Bachelors Degree in International Relations at Padjadjaran University, Indonesia. During her undergraduate degree, she was actively involved in student organizations and did some volunteer work. The following year, she received a scholarship from the Norwegian Center for Human Rights to continue her studies. Now, Maelanny is pursuing a Masters Degree on human rights at the faculty of law, University of Oslo. Prior to this degree, she worked for an Indonesian NGO that focused on economic and social rights and children’s right to education. Her academic interests include childrens’ rights, economic and social rights, human rights and Islam, and international development.

For the fellowship, she’ll be working with Backward Society Education (BASE) in combating child labor, particularly in the Tharu community, one of the indigenous people in Nepal. She plans to write her thesis on child labor issues, in which case this will serve as a great opportunity for her to experience the reality, and implement her knowledge.
