A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"Speaking with locals and living in a country is the best way to learn about the real lives of citizens, not just the stories in the mainstream media. I will be more critical of what I read as a result of this experience. I also feel even more grateful for my education, and I feel a stronger responsibility to assist others who do not have resources or access to opportunities in their communities."

Maria Skouras (New York University) volunteered in 2011 as a Peace Fellow for eHomemakers in Malaysia.

Quinn Van Valer-Campbell and Bosnian Women's Center (BOSFAM)

Quinn was born and raised in Santa Cruz, California.  After having graduated from Fordham University and studied abroad in the Balkans, Quinn continues her education at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.  She will receive her master’s in international policies studies with a concentration in conflict resolution in December of 2011.  The Balkans have held a special place in Quinn’s life since she first visited the region in 2007.  She worked with several local NGOs during her time abroad and she is thrilled to have the opportunity to give back to the area and people she is passionate about.

Her interests include volunteering as a mediator for the Small Claims Court of Monterey, being an active participant and club leader at school, dancing, and learning new languages.  She has traveled far and wide both solo and with family and friends, but hopes to further expand the reaches of her knowledge as much as possible.
