A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"I look at myself as having the potential to be as strong and caring as the amazing women I met in Kenya."

Kate Cummings (Tufts University) volunteered in 2009 as a Peace Fellow for Vital Voices in Africa.

Girls recite from the Koran at Godah school in Wardak province, Afghanistan. The school was one of six set up by the Oruj Learning Center, an AP partner. AP has helped to raise over $100,000 for Oruj, and sent three Peace Fellows to help Sadiqa Basiri, Oruj's inspiring founder and director.

AP offers services aimed at helping partners to tell their story and take action. These services are described below. They are offered through Peace Fellows, who receive training from AP and round-the-clock support during their deployment.

Tell the story: Peace Fellows help their hosts to profile stakeholders through blogs, video, podcasts, photos and the written word. This puts a face on disempowerment and provides partners with content for their campaigns and websites.

Develop information tools: Peace Fellows work with an "accidental techie" from their host organization to develop websites, online bulletins, and social networking tools. This builds demand for ICT within the group and reach supporters.

Build a campaign: AP helps between 3 and 5 partners a year to develop campaign goals, identify donors, draft proposals, build an international constituency, and launch a campaign.
