A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"Speaking with locals and living in a country is the best way to learn about the real lives of citizens, not just the stories in the mainstream media. I will be more critical of what I read as a result of this experience. I also feel even more grateful for my education, and I feel a stronger responsibility to assist others who do not have resources or access to opportunities in their communities."

Maria Skouras (New York University) volunteered in 2011 as a Peace Fellow for eHomemakers in Malaysia.

Samantha Hammer and Kosovo Women's Network

Samantha Hammer is excited to be working with the Kosovo Women's Network as a Peace Fellow with the Advocacy Project. Samantha first became interested governance and human rights issues while traveling through the former Yugoslavia, and particularly Kosovo, during a college study abroad program in Budapest. She is looking forward to returning to Kosovo to support and learn from the courageous women of KWN.

Samantha is currently working toward a Master of International Affairs degree at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, where she is studying Economic and Political Development and International Media, Advocacy and Communications. She is especially interested in civil society's role in improving governance and securing human rights in post-conflict countries. She writes and edits for SIPA's student newspaper, Communiqué, and coordinates activities for SIPA's Grassroots Policy Network.

Prior to arriving at Columbia, Samantha worked at the Pacific Council on International Policy in her native Los Angeles, California, where she was the Special Assistant to the President and Coordinator of the Council's Equitable Globalization Committee.

Samantha earned her B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles, where she majored in European Studies.
