The Advocacy Project (AP) is a DC-based non-profit dedicated to strengthening civil society around the world.  Using a grassroots approach, we support advocates who work in social justice and human rights at the community level.  Our mission is to help community partners to produce, use, and disseminate information about their advocacy work.  Each year, we recruit Peace Fellows to volunteer directly with our partner organizations.

Currently, we have an immediate need to fill a Peace Fellowship in San Salvador, El Salvador, with CEMUJER.  The position is fulltime (~40 hours/weeks), unpaid, and for the duration of approximately ten to twelve weeks.  The Fellow will report to the director of CEMUJER as well as to the AP Fellowship Coordinator.

Job Description:

EL SALVADOR: Advocating for women’s human rights in post-conflict El Salvador

Based in: San Salvador

Host: CEMUJER of El Salvador. CEMUJER is a non-governmental organization dedicated to realizing the rights of women in post-conflict El Salvador.  Founded in 1990 as “The Institution of Women’s Human Rights,” CEMUJER advocates to end gender-based discrimination by mobilizing women, men, NGOs, and government entities to create policy that fosters equality among the sexes.  In addition to community organizing, CEMUJER also offers various services. These include: rights-based education, health clinics, domestic violence hotlines, legal council, etc.  Their vision is to create a culture that respects human rights without gender disparity. http://www.angelfire.com/nh/cemujer/

International Fellowship with the Dale Farm Community Association for The Advocacy Project

Job Description:
THE UNITED KINGDOM: Campaigning for the Rights of Irish Travellers, Advocating for Housing Rights and Against Evictions.

Based in: Essex, UK

Duration: Approximately six months

Host: The Peace Fellow will work with the Dale Farm Community Association, which represents the largest “Gypsy” and Traveller encampment in the UK and has been under threat of eviction for more than five years. Several “yards” (encampments) have already been bulldozed by the local authorities, and the case again came before British High Court earlier this year. The successful candidate will spearhead AP’s successful and high profile campaign to support the Travellers in their efforts to avoid eviction. The campaign culminated in a High Court recent ruling in favor of the Travellers. AP has been asked to build on this, and organize ICT training for the Dale Farm children, very few of whom go to school. The Dale Farm Association is seeking the help of a dedicated human rights advocate, starting as soon as possible, to help them organize, advocate, and build their community association. The post is ideal for someone interested in human rights and European minorities. For more information on Dale Farm, please consult the AP website: http://www.advocacynet.org/page/dalefarm
