The Advocacy Project (AP) is a DC-based non-profit dedicated to strengthening civil society around the world. Using a grassroots approach, we support advocates who work in social justice and human rights at the community level. Our mission is to help community partners to produce, use, and disseminate information about their advocacy work. Each year, we recruit Peace Fellows to volunteer directly with our partner organizations.
Currently, we have an immediate need to fill a Peace Fellowship in San Salvador, El Salvador, with CEMUJER. The position is fulltime (~40 hours/weeks), unpaid, and for the duration of approximately ten to twelve weeks. The Fellow will report to the director of CEMUJER as well as to the AP Fellowship Coordinator.
Job Description:
EL SALVADOR: Advocating for women’s human rights in post-conflict El Salvador
Based in: San Salvador
** Note: This Fellowship is sponsored! The Peace Fellow will receive a $1000 stipend plus the cost of insurance.
Host: CEMUJER of El Salvador. CEMUJER is a non-governmental organization dedicated to realizing the rights of women in post-conflict El Salvador. Founded in 1990 as “The Institution of Women’s Human Rights,” CEMUJER advocates to end gender-based discrimination by mobilizing women, men, NGOs, and government entities to create policy that fosters equality among the sexes. In addition to community organizing, CEMUJER also offers various services. These include: rights-based education, health clinics, domestic violence hotlines, legal council, etc. Their vision is to create a culture that respects human rights without gender disparity. http://www.angelfire.com/nh
Responsibilities:
- Assist CEMUJER in disseminating their publications to a wider local and international audience (via networking and outreach)
- Continue developing and maintaining CEMUJER’s website (including written content, esthetic quality, pictures, etc.)
- Work with director and other CEMUJER members to further the development of CEMUJER’s advocacy and lobbying strategies (locally, regionally, and internationally)
- Collaborate with staff to creatively expand and develop their programming and information production (e.g., e-newsletter, photojournalism, video, blogging, etc.)
- Expand CEMUJER’s network of contacts, locally and internationally
- Produce information on CEMUJER’s work through blogs
- Develop and expand the CEMUJER partner page for the AP website
Qualifications:
- Advanced Spanish (written and oral)
- Website development skills preferred, with willingness to expand skill-set
- Understanding of and interest in advocating for gender equality
- Understanding of human rights, social justice, and development
- Self-reliance, flexibility, and a sense of improvisation & creativity
- Excellent writing, editing, and research (especially Internet research) skills - for information production and dissemination
- At least one year of graduate-level study in a relevant field
- Some ICT skills preferred, as well as an ability and willingness to expand skill-set
- Experience working in a cross-cultural context (specifically Latin America) highly valued
International Fellowship with the Dale Farm Community Association for The Advocacy Project
Job Description:
Based in: Essex, UK
Duration: Approximately six months
Host: The Peace Fellow will work with the Dale Farm Community Association, which represents the largest “Gypsy” and Traveller encampment in the UK and has been under threat of eviction for more than five years. Several “yards” (encampments) have already been bulldozed by the local authorities, and the case again came before British High Court earlier this year. The successful candidate will spearhead AP’s successful and high profile campaign to support the Travellers in their efforts to avoid eviction. The campaign culminated in a High Court recent ruling in favor of the Travellers. AP has been asked to build on this, and organize ICT training for the Dale Farm children, very few of whom go to school. The Dale Farm Association is seeking the help of a dedicated human rights advocate, starting as soon as possible, to help them organize, advocate, and build their community association. Responsibilities
- Produce information regularly about the case by: posting regular blogs on the AP site; producing material for news bulletins and press releases
- Help the Travelers to produce their own newsletter
- Manage a new ICT center at the Dale Farm site, and provide a series of ICT services in line with the AP model:
- Training two or more Traveler women to take over running of the center
- Providing basic training in ICT for up to 15 women and children (using AP modules)
- Building a wiki page (basic website) for the Travelers, that can evolve into a website
- Updating the DF partner page on the AP website
- Working with AP to send out news bulletins
- Networking: help to develop an extensive network of civil society and other contacts, in the UK and abroad; build contacts with the local and other media
- Outreach: Help the Travellers take their case to European human rights bodies and the UN; support their campaigns; reach out to the local non-Traveller population
- Fundraising: working with AP‘s development department to raise funds for the Dale Farm campaign, as appropriate and needed
Qualifications
- Self-starter who is not afraid to plunge him/herself into the community and hit the ground running
- Knowledge of international human rights laws and norms, especially regarding housing and freedom of movement (knowledge of UK laws a plus)
- Awareness of issues facing severely marginalized groups (Roma, Gypsy, Traveller population a plus)
- Understanding of key elements of effective advocacy and activism (direct experience preferred)
- ICT savvy
- Attention to detail
- Effective communication skills (oral & written)
- Willingness to travel throughout region for reporting purposes
- Self-starter, energetic, confident
