Chi Vu and Survivor Corps in Vietnam

Chi Vu is completing a Masters degree in international educational development at Teachers College, Columbia University.  Her research focuses on formal and informal education as instruments for justice and human rights, particularly in post-conflict communities.  She graduated from Yale in 2005 with a BA in English and certification to teach English at the secondary level.

Chi spent two years of her childhood in refugee camps in Malaysia and the Philippines, where she received an exceptional education both in schools set up by NGOs and within the camp community.  This experience, along with the guidance of her awesome parents, helped to nurture her belief in the potential for empowerment in education.

Over the years, she has worked in a number of education-based activities in the community, which include teaching Vietnamese language to kids in Little Saigon, mentoring children from disadvantaged backgrounds in New Haven, and teaching in the Bronx.  Most recently, she went to the highland region of Cambodia to conduct an evaluation of a community-run bilingual school program.

This summer, Chi will be working with Survivor Corps (formerly the Landmine Survivors Network) in Vietnam’s Quang Binh province to help the network reach a broader constituency and expand its visibility.  Quang Binh remains one of the most heavily bomb-impacted regions in Vietnam; it is also one of the most underserved.  Survivor Corps Vietnam works to mitigate these problems by helping survivors to recover and reclaim their lives.  Specific areas of action include health, economic opportunity, and social empowerment, all of which are tailored to the needs of each survivor.

Chi is excited to have this opportunity to work with and learn from this dedicated group of individuals as an AP Peace Fellow.

FIND A PARTNER

The Advocacy Project develops partnerships with advocates on the frontline and with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). In so doing, we take our cue from partners and tailor any support to their needs.
