A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"I look at myself as having the potential to be as strong and caring as the amazing women I met in Kenya."

Kate Cummings (Tufts University) volunteered in 2009 as a Peace Fellow for Vital Voices in Africa.

Adam Welti and Skills and Agricultural Development Services (SADS)

The Fletcher School at Tufts University

This summer Adam will be working with Skills and Agricultural Development Services (SADS), in Monrovia, Liberia. Collaborating with SADS, Adam will work to protect the environmental rights of Liberians and work to educate youth and rural Liberians about environmental issues.

Adam, originally from Plainview, Minnesota, is a graduate student at The Fletcher School at Tufts University studying international environment and resource policy.  Prior to beginning his studies at Fletcher, Adam worked as an English language assistant at a high school in Saint Dizier, France.

His interest in North and West Africa grew after he spent two years in Morocco as a Peace Corps Volunteer working in the area of natural resource management and community development.  He enjoyed his time living and working in a small Berber village in the High Atlas Mountains, working with the local community to identify needs and priorities as a means to addressing the problems of drought and desertification on the subsistence agriculture system.  His work with the community and local partners included acquiring grant funds to augment a community beekeeping operation with maintenance equipment, additional hives and technical training.  Additionally, Adam worked with fellow Volunteers to conduct a community project training workshop and various health and environmental education sessions.

Adam worked on a local political campaign in Minnesota during his final year of undergraduate study.  In this position Adam assisted in designing and implementing the overall campaign strategy, facilitating logistics, coordinating volunteer events, developing and editing campaign literature, and overseeing the campaign budget.

During his undergraduate studies at the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities, Adam focused on environment and natural resource science.   His studies at Fletcher will allow him to combine his science background with a greater understanding of international policy.  He looks forward to working with SADS to use this environmental background to help build the capacity of rural Liberians this summer.
