August 30 International Day of the Mising: Exhibition of Clothing of Victims from Putis Begins
Ayacucho, Peru - Twenty-six years after forced disappearances were first reported, the Peruvian Forensic Anthropology Team (EPAF) will commemorate the International Day of the Missing by holding a ceremony in the province of Huanta, Ayacucho region, Peru.
According to the most recent estimates, around 15,000 persons are still missing in Peru. This tragedy and the prolonged suffering of the victims' families should not be pushed aside by the State nor by civil society, who were also affected by the violence.
August 30, at 10:00 am, in the Civic Center of Huanta, one of the provinces most affected by the violence, an ecumenical ceremony will be held to remember the thousands of missing and the persistence of the families in their search for answers. Representatives from several churches, State Institutions and civil society organizations, as well as representatives from various victims organizations in various regions of Peru, will be in attendance.
This same day an Exhibition of Clothing and Personal Effects from the mass graves at Putis will begin. This is one of the final investigative steps to identify the victims and what happened tothem. By initiating this exhibition on such an important date it is hoped that Peruvians will reflect on the necessity of continuing the search for truth and justice.
On this International Day of the Missing, EPAF appeals to State
institutions and to civil society to work harder in responding to the needs of the victims' families in order to end their prolonged suffering.
