Southeast Asia – Violence Against Women
In 1999, AP’s former Technical Director Teresa Crawford and consultant Laura McGrew visited Cambodia to attend a conference on violence against women. They produced a series of On the Record - Women of Southeast Asia Fight Violence on the meeting.
Issue 1: Series Launch
Issue 2: Defining the Problem
This issue begins with an opinion by Indai Lourdes Sajor that outlines why we need to pursue women's rights in Southeast Asia. The rest of the issue introduces the problem of defining women's rights and the problem of violence against women in the region.
Issue 3: The Solutions
Issue 3 presents solutions to curb violence against women including how to get involved in advocacy. Also included is a piece concerning the use of the internet by women's groups and how oppressive governments in the region have been trying restrict this essential medium.
Issue 4: Portraits of Courage
In this issue, Laura McGrew profiles the participants at the Cambodia seminar, including women from Burma, Indonesia and Cambodia. There is also a section in this issue where participants in the conference tell us about themselves in their own words.
Issue 5: Cambodia – In the Shadow of the Khmer Rouge This issue – the last in this series – examines this debate. In the first article Laura McGrew looks at the astonishing abuse and violence suffered by Cambodian women during the Khmer Rouge rule, and argues that forced marriage in particular should be covered by the statute of any tribunal.
