> Sri Lanka – Reb...
The Advocacy Project has raised $2,500 for the Home for Human Rights in Sri Lanka. Of this, $1,000 was raised through AP's online appeal and another $1,500 collected from Georgetown University students and faculty. Thirteen students volunteered to man tables at the Georgetown campus, under the direction of Michael Keller who interned with HHR last summer.
HHR has begun to work on reconstruction projects with 171 Tamil families left destitute by the Tsunami in the eastern town of Batticaloa. The families who lived on the margins of society before the disaster - have elected a committee of nine and hope to open a sewing center for about 30 young women with emergency funding that is being channeled through HHR. Others are interested in picking up their previous lives as cobblers. HHR plans to rent a sewing room, hire a teacher, and purchase sewing machines and shoe-mending equipment. HHR is also strengthening its own capacity to produce regular reports and keep its donors and partners abroad informed.
The Advocacy Project would like to extend its appreciation to the following Georgetown student volunteers who braved the cold and collected donations:
Mike Keller - Huda Abdi Aden - Heather Powell - Jason Christopher Lewis-Berry - Erin Torre - Janine Marie Keil - Karen Cobos - Faiza Jabeen Ali - David Balwanz - Tara Patenaude - Jeff Cary - Helene Harroff -Tavel - Brent Latham - Jennifer Klein

Sri Lanka – Rebuilding After the Tsunami
In 2004, AP developed a partnership with the Home for Human Rights (HHR), a well-respected human rights organization with contacts in the minority Tamil community. After the tsunami struck on December 26, 2004, AP helped HHR to raise funds for six Tamil communities on the east coast that were struggling against discrimination and the aftermath of the wave. AP published HHR’s monthly reports on the project. In October 2005, AP Director Iain Guest visited the communities and posted diaries on the AP website.
