COCAP report - April 22, 2006 2006: Kathmandu
COCAP HR Monitoring team has been able to monitor the major demonstration sites in the valley today irrespective of government denial to let the pass during the curfew time. As usual, the autocratic and undemocratic nature of the present government has been proved to be more than excess regarding Human Rights issues by no providing curfew passes to humanitarian activists. Tens of thousands of demonstrators have marched through inner parts of the capital, Kathmandu, Saturday afternoon chanting slogans against Friday’s royal proclamation.
Security force fired bullets indiscriminately toward the peaceful rally this afternoon. At least eight persons were injured at Tripureswore when security personnel opened fire to stop the crowd from moving towards Tundikhel (Shahid Manch). Thousands of people had walked for hours to reach Tripureswore from Bhaktapur and surrounding areas. As the security personnel dispersed the crowed, thousands of people crossed over the Bagmati bridge. Another rally from Patan came towards Baneshwor are through Thapathali.
There was organized a protest rally of millions of people in major areas of city, Bhaktapur, Tinkune, Baneshwor, Maitighar, Thapathali, Tripureshwor etc. Similarly, demonstrators from Kalanki led a huge rally and went through Samakhushi, Thamel, Thahiti, Ason and Bhotahity.
Without issuing any reason, the government has cut off the mobile phone connection. Since tens of thousands of people took to the Kathmandu streets on Saturday defying curfew orders and denouncing Friday's royal proclamation, mobile phones went down by the government.
The monitoring team of COCAP has visited Kathmandu Model Hospital to observe the situation of injured persons due to today's police gunfire at different places of valley. The team has reported that over 120 injured protesters have been brought to the hospital till 5.30 pm and condition of 20 was serious.
