A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"I look at myself as having the potential to be as strong and caring as the amazing women I met in Kenya."

Tone Down the Feisty Rhetoric

The Dale Farm Bulletin #7
July 26, 2007

For Immediate Release
Contact: Grattan Puxon, Secretary of Dale Farm Housing Association, +44 01206523528

In attempting to discredit the East of England Regional Assembly’s initial estimate on the number of Traveller pitches needed in Basildon District, Tory Councilor Malcolm Buckley has shown himself to be a strong detractor in finding a peaceful resolution to the Dale Farm saga. (ECHO, July 23rd).

Instead of bashing the survey being enacted to accurately gauge the current number of Travellers living in Basildon as a “money-making conspiracy,” why doesn’t Mr. Buckley tone down his feisty rhetoric and offer support to establish the number of Travellers living in his district? Surely, Mr. Buckley agrees that in a county where 20,000 to 25,000 homes are set to be built in each of the next five years, the allocation of 1,220 pitches for Travellers, less than 1% of the total, is a reasonable and even necessary number.

Perhaps Mr. Buckley failure to compromise and aid in the implementation of the survey stems from the fact that he has painted himself into a political corner concerning the Travellers at Dale Farm. His allocation of over two million pounds worth of council funds in order to evict the Travellers is sad reminders of his obsession with seeing Dale Farm disappear.

Mr. Buckley needs to stop his personal vendetta against the Travellers. Instead of spending his time conjuring up ways to decry the findings of institutions such as the East of England Regional Assembly, Mr. Buckley would better serve himself and his constituency by coming up with a an alternative figure before firing accusation from the hip.
