The UN Special Session on Children (2001-2002)

In December 2000, the NGO Committee for UNICEF – a coalition of NGOs that support UNICEF – asked AP to cover the Special Session of the UN General Assembly on Children, which was scheduled to take place in September 2001. The project was coordinated by Mary Diaz, head of the Refugee Women’s Commission and leading member of the UNICEF NGO Committee. AP covered the three preparatory committee meetings through an online newsletter, On The Record For Children. The Special Session was then postponed until May 6 2002, following the 9/11 attacks. AP recruited a team of reporters to cover the Special Session, including several young journalists, and produced a printed newspaper. These have been scanned and are available below.
