The Senegal Migrants Quilt (2022)

The blocks for this quilt were stitched by mothers in Senegal whose sons drowned while trying to reach Europe by boat. The project was sponsored by OPEN-SARL, a social enterprise near Dakar that supports returned migrants, and organized by Justin Gatlin, an AP Peace Fellow. The finished blocks were quilted by Kathy Springer in Indiana and are laid on a background that depicts a raging sea.
