November 10, 2008, Belgrade, Serbia: Three European human rights groups, including Women in Black-Serbia, have released a statement warning that right-wing extremist groups are increasing their numbers.
“There are ever more voices calling for hatred and violence, and they are being validated by equating these voices with those of ordinary citizens, especially those who work in the field of human rights,” the statement read.
The organizations stated that pro-fascist and neo-Nazi groups are gaining strength in Serbia, and there is little political will for combating the country’s “criminal past.”
Women in Black, Queeria and United Networks released the statement in conjunction with the International Day Against Fascism and Anti-Semitism Nov. 9. The day marks the “Crystal Night” of November 1938, when the Nazis began the systematic persecution of Jews in Germany.
Women in Black-Serbia, a partner of The Advocacy Project, is a women’s peace group based in Belgrade.
