Dalit family thrown out of village in Nepal

06 Oct

Kathmandu: A Dalit family was recently exiled from their village in the Sihara District of Nepal after their son married a non-Dalit woman, according to the latest e-bulletin from the Jagaran Media Center.

After 30-year-old Satyanarayan Khatwe eloped with Hemlata Chaudhary, his 20-year-old non-Dalit lover, Mr Khatwe’s mother, father, and two siblings were banned from their home. Outraged villagers destroyed the house and took over their property.

The Jagaran Media Center (JMC) is an organization of Dalit journalists who report on and raise awareness of caste discrimination in Nepal. JMC is a partner of the Advocacy Project. Read more from the JMC e-bulletin.
