After the Second Intifada, the Israeli government began building a wall separating the Israeli and Palestinian territories, partially along the 1949 Jordanian/Israeli armistice line, but mostly through Palestinian-held territory. The erection of the wall continues to be highly controversial in the international community, and it is referred to by many as a “segregation” wall or an “apartheid” wall. Protest graffiti covers the Palestinian side of the wall, much of it referring to the peace process and the state-sponsored discrimination. Some of the most famous artwork adorning the wall is by British graffiti-guerrilla artist Banksy, who decorated portions of the Palestinian side of the wall and alongside Palestinian refugee camps.
